CHECKING-IN X MARRIOTT CULTURE & COMMUNITY BUSINESS COUNCIL SOUTH PANEL DISCUSSION TO MARK MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK.
We found this discussion informative and picked up some useful tips to help you manage your own mental health at work, in preparing to return to work and in looking out for your colleagues.
We have summarised the panel discussion and key learning points below:
Manage your energy
Build up mental and physical well-being to build resilience against mental ill-health
Plan and adapt your routine – keep what has worked well over the last months and build it into your new daily routine
Expect change after change, and expect the unexpected
Take it slow, and take a breath, consider how you will manage your energy
Start keeping busy before you have a full program at work – it’s a marathon and not a sprint
Compassion
Be compassionate to yourself, as to others
Be aware of the ‘need’ for perfection, or the perceived expectation to work long hours, notice if this brings unhelpful judgement
Learn to say no, or say yes with conditions – know what you are realistically capable of
Ask – are you OK? And are you really OK?
Create a sense of togetherness, be aware that it can be overwhelming
Think about a quiet place to go to take 5 minutes respite
Purpose
Create a sense of purpose
Think about why we are here and what we are working to achieve
Listening
Start conversations to create the opportunity to listen
Speak to the behaviour observed, and invite reflection - it is better to say something than to say nothing
The more open you are yourself; the more people will seek you out to talk
Your vulnerability is a strength
Practice mindful listening, avoid assumptions or directing the conversation, creating space to allow reflection
Resources
Marriott Associates can access meQ for free, or the Employee Assistance Program
Your GP and the NHS website can be a great resource for support
